The Middle East a scary place these days. Threats are real and the safety and security of the region and the world are at risk. Groups like Al-Qaeda (Army of Islam including Jaysh al-Islam / Tawhid / Jihad Brigades; Doghmush, Abu Qatada, Azzam Brigades, Jund Ansar Allah, Fatah al-Islam, Jaljalat, Al-Tawhid Wal-Jihad fi Filastin); Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade; Hamas (including the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades); Jamaat Ansar al-Sunna, Ansar al-Islam, Al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (including the Al-Quds Brigades), The Popular Resistance Committees, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) (including Abu Ali Mustapha Brigades and Jihad Jibril Brigades) as well the legacy of Iran, Syria and Iraq all contribute to the situation. The complex realities are often difficult to understand and the sense of pessimism and hopelessness are too pervasive. The questions surrounding Israeli-Palestinian peace and the possibility of a two states solution are deeply debated. Gershon Baskin’s political, educational and military backgrounds give him a unique perspective for assessing the key challenges of sustainable peace, international diplomacy and environmental security.

This is an opportune time to invite Gershon to your community to speak about these and other issues.

In this presentation, Gershon will examine the possible policy options facing President Trump and his advisers and possible outcomes of their choices. Gershon Baskin will focus on how the situation in Israel and Palestine is connected to the war and suffering in Syria and the strengthening of Egypt and Jordan. He will touch upon the need of continuing to assist the Palestinian, mainly the private sector, in order to build a more secure Palestinian economy. Gershon will share his ideas on how President Trump should take a strong stand on radical Islamic terrorism, against Al-Qaida and against ISIS in order to help to create a more secure Middle East and a more secure world. He will discuss how unilateral actions of either side that could make the process of reaching agreements more difficult, and will share his perspectives of Jerusalem related issues.

Pursuit of Peace in Israel and Palestine

Pursuit of Peace in Israel and Palestine

Geshon Baskin’s new book In Pursuit of Peace in Israel and Palestine (published by the Vanderbilt Univ. Press) details his 40 years of intensive pursuit of peace. Gershon was involved in creating & directing the Institute for Education for Jewish-Arab Coexistence and founding and co-directing the only joint Israeli Palestinian public policy think & do-tank in the world. During the many cycles of peace negotiations, Gershon Baskin has served not only as an trusted adviser to many of the regions leaders, but also as a radical agitator advocating a sustainable peace. In the book, Gershon Baskin reveals how relations in the Middle East are based on justified fear, influenced by lack of human contact and reinforced by continued violence that solidify patterns of thinking and behavior that negatively influence public policies. Dr. Baskin shares his life experience and wisdom in transforming the sustentation of the conflict to breaking out of animosity and turning a new page. What the parties in conflict say and do are mutually influential and reinforcing in keeping the parties in conflict.

The Secret Conduit to Freedom – The Story of the Secret Negotiations between Israel and the Hamas Islamic Resistance Movement

Gilad Shalit and Gershon Baskin

Gilad Shalit and Gershon Baskin

A long line of diplomats and intelligence officers from Egypt, Germany, France, Turkey and other countries tried for more than five years to reach a deal between Israel and Hamas that would free the abducted soldier Gilad Shalit. In his presentation, Gershon Baskin describes in detail his first hand experience in initiating and establishing the secret direct channel of talks that he held with the Hamas since the first week after Shalit’s abduction on June 25, 2006. He shares how he initiated the breakthrough in negotiations by opening a channel of communication between the Hamas and David Meidan, the Mossad officer appointed by Prime Minister Netanyahu to bring Shalit home after years in captivity. Gershon focuses on the conditions that enabled the deal to be reached, how the deal was closed, the dilemmas involved, and the lessons that need to be learned from the ordeal.

Gershon Baskin discusses the impact of these challenges for the Peace process in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and the international geopolitical landscape. He describes the numerous effects on human security, environment, energy, security, business, and the evolving geostrategic situation. When it comes to understanding the range of both benefits and risks, few are as knowledgeable than Gershon Baskin to furnish comprehensive observations and honest assessments.

Peace process in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict

Gershon Baskin and Mohammad Abbas (Abu Mazen)

Gershon Baskin and Mohammad Abbas (Abu Mazen)

The peace process in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict has taken shape over the years despite the ongoing violence which has prevailed since the beginning of the conflict. Since the 1980’s Gershon Baskin has been on the forefront of efforts to research and develop the terms upon which a viable peace can be agreed to in both the Palestinian–Israeli conflict and the broader Arab–Israeli conflict.  In his dynamic presentation Gershon focuses on the numerous failures and success of the process, sharing the valuable lessons learned from his years of first hand experience as the advisor to leaders of both sides of the conflict. Asking “Is Israeli-Palestinian peace still viable? Is the two-states for two-peoples option still alive?” Gershon discusses proposals/plans that could have changed the course of history and shares his candid insights on how to run/not run a peace process, including his own list of do’s and don’ts of peace negotiations. He spotlights the lessons that can be easily adopted and applied in other conflict settings including an examination of the difference between Good/Bad agreements and Good/Bad implementations and the difficulties in applying negotiations theory to actual negotiations. Gershon debates the roles of third parties in monitoring, verification and treaty enforcement and discusses international engagement including the need/not need for international mediators and negotiators. In the light of the current intense and indirect three-way diplomacy between representatives of Hamas, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority; intra-Palestinian reconciliation talks and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry initiatives, Gershon will share his recommendations as to the efficacy of interim processes with long term goals, how to succeed in the current stage of the process, and what we can learn from other conflicts and peace processes. When it comes to understanding the complexities of the Middle East, few are as experienced as Gershon Baskin to impart expert insights and candid appraisals of the situation. Gershon focuses on the numerous failures and successes of the process, and the valuable lessons learned from his years of first hand experience as an advisor to leaders of both sides of the conflict.

Environmental Policy and Sustainable Peace in the 21st Century

Solar Panels

Solar Panels

With the latest data and innovations, Gershon Baskin confronts environmental issues facing the planet and their impact on Middle East civilization that both conveys valuable information while stimulating audiences to think and act differently. Gershon discusses his personal experience in developing affordable solar generated electricity in the Middle East, Rwanda, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador and Romania. Arguing that the environmental changes in our planet influence both local and global economies, he encourages audiences to consider the integration of environmental, social and political issues in developing international relations. Gershon talks about the need for commitment to enact policy mechanisms concerning environmental issues and sustainability that will prevent harmful effects on the biophysical environment and natural resources. He discusses numerous aspects of air and water pollution, solid waste management, biodiversity, ecosystem management, maintenance of biodiversity, the protection of natural resources, wildlife and endangered species. He focuses on comprehensive attempts to unify environmental security together with societal, economic and political security, arguing that neither of aspects is attainable in the long run without synergy between each other.

Gershon Baskin

Gershon Baskin is one of the most recognizable names in the Middle East Peace process. He is a political and social entrepreneur who has dedicated his life to peace between Israel and its neighbors. His dedication to creating a culture of peace and environmental awareness, coupled with his impeccable integrity, has earned him the trust of the leaders of all sides of the century old conflict. Few people have such far-reaching and positive impacts on promoting peace, security, prosperity and bi-national relationships. Gershon is an advisor to Israeli, Palestinian and International Prime Ministers on the Middle East Peace Process and the founder and director of IPCRI, the Israeli-Palestinian Public Policy Institute. He was the initiator and negotiator of the secret back channel between Israel and Hamas for the release of 1,027 prisoners – mainly Palestinians and Arab-Israelis of which 280 were sentenced to life in prison, including Yahya Sinwar, the current Palestinian leader of the Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The prisoners were imprisoned for planning and perpetrating various attacks against Jewish targets that resulted in the killing of 569 Israelis in exchange for one Israeli soldier, Gilad Schalit. Gershon is actively involved in research and advocacy concerning topics such as social policy, environmental security, political strategy, peace education, economics, culture and in the development of affordable solar projects with the goal of providing clean electricity for 50 million people by 2020. He is a founding member of Kol Ezraheiha-Kol Muwanteneiha (All of the Citizens) political party in Israel. He is now directing The Holy Land Bond and is the Middle East Director for ICO – International Communities Organization - a UK based NGO working in conflict zones with failed peace processes.
